There is an investigation underway that has already produced charges against a man responsible for a stabbing in Neptune Township over the weekend.

While the investigation is still ongoing, the suspect in the stabbing in Neptune Township has been arrested, according to the Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office.

Acting Monmouth County Prosecutor Lori Linskey said that 32-year-old Derrick Sims of Neptune Township is being charged with first-degree murder, third-degree Unlawful Possession of a Weapon -- for using a knife -- and third-degree Hindering after he allegedly stabbed a man, killing him following an altercation the two had on Sunday morning.

What investigators working the case have learned thus far is that Neptune Township Police responded to the Squirrel Road area for a call about a stabbing around 5:44 am.

Once at the scene, police officers found a man unresponsive in the front yard of a residence and declared him dead upon arrival.

The circumstances surrounding the alleged altercation and stabbing including where and how many times the victim was stabbed have not yet been disclosed by the Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office.

The investigation into the fatal stabbing is active and ongoing, Acting Monmouth County Prosecutor Linskey said in a statement.

As the probe continues, Simms is being detained following his arrest at the Monmouth County Correctional Institute in Freehold Township, pending a detention hearing.
