Have you ever imagined what your dog’s human voice would sound like? Me too. Unfortunately, we may never know how their voices would sound but we can decipher what they are trying to tell us. There are some universal behaviors that lead experts to believe that there is a doggie language and if we pay attention to their signals we can understand what they are trying to say.
This is a weird one…you thought you were getting puppy kisses because your pooch loves you, and they do, but more than that they are hungry. What does hunger have to do with kisses? When puppies are first born they learn to lick their mama’s face to get a little extra food left over on her fur. This is a hint that you need to feed your friend.
Pay attention to their tail! When they wag to the right that means they want to come up to you and get love when they wag left they want to avoid something. When they are scared they tuck their little tails between their legs. A cat will show it wants to play if its tail twitches and has a curve up in the air.
The Silent Treatment
Is your dog mad at you? They could be. My beautiful late Irish Setter Roxy would be so mad that we brought her to a boarding place when we went on vacation that when we got her home she would not even look at me. Literally, there would be no eye contact even if I put my face right in front of her. Experts say that is the tried and true sign that your pet is angry with you.
On a brighter note, how do you know that you are making your pet happy? They tell you with their whole body. We also had an English Bulldog named “Big Sal” and he would shimmy every time we came home. It was like he was wagging his whole body. That is the universal sign of love and happiness. God, I miss seeing him do that! Also, when your dog or cat puts their paw on you for no reason, it is an expression of gratitude. You can read more about this in Readers Digest.
